It's Your Fault, Part I
Edmund finds an upset Alex on the beach, sitting on a rock, staring out at the sea. When he places a hand on her shoulder, she shrugs it off angrily and jumps up.  (Sept. 27, 1999)

Alexandra (shoving him away hard): "It's your fault. You drove Dimitri to his death." (She motions towards the water.)

Edmund: "You're blaming me?"

Alexandra: "Yes. You had to have everything your way, to hell with your brother's wishes."

Edmund: "I wanted him to live."

Alexandra: "Oh, you just forged ahead as though no one else mattered. You insisted on that treatment against..."

Edmund: "Whoa, whoa, whoa."

Alexandra: "...My better judgment."

Edmund: "Whoa. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. We both wanted that. We were scared, and he was dying. We both grabbed at that treatment."

Alexandra: "Yes, I was scared. And I was so damn tired of fighting you. And so we go ahead. And the little progress he made, that wasn't enough for you. No, you saw that as a fait accompli. But he was so weak and frightened, and he couldn't face going home."

Edmund (unsympathetically): "Well, that's too damn bad because it would have saved his life."

Alexandra: "His life was over for him. Don't you get that? Shipping him back to Wildwind... what for? To be tended like a little vegetable in the garden? You think that's what he wanted? Is that the quality of life your brother deserved? I don't think so." (She turns her back on him, looking out at the water.)

Edmund: "He deserved a chance. When I was in that aqueduct and I was dying, he saved my life and I told him, 'No, no, go on, save yours.' But no. He kept diving. He risked his life."

Alexandra (turning back to face him): "Yes, of course he did because there were things that were more important to him than his own life. There can be dignity in death. And he was ready to die, and you prolonged his agony. Why? So that that little girl Maddie could go and visit him in the sickroom and be scared to death? He could barely lift his head off the pillow, but he could see the pity in your
eyes, and he hated that!" (She starts sobbing, and raising her voice to yell at him.) "That was worse than death to him and you condemned him to that! You never saved your brother's life, you killed him! And I will never forgive you for that!"

The scene fades out, return later.
Edmund (quietly): "Dimitri's gone. And if there's anyone to blame, it's you."

Alexandra: "Oh, I did everything I could."

Edmund: "You kept him from his family. If you had let him be treated at home, he would still be there, safe and protected."

Alexandra: "He didn't want that."

Edmund: "He didn't know what he wanted. He was too sick to know it."

Alexandra: "No, not in the beginning he wasn't. He was very lucid. No heroic measures were to be taken."

Edmund (flabbergasted): "Heroic measures? Keeping a man safe in his own bed?"

Alexandra (holding her hands folded her her face, in tears): "He left that room on purpose. It wasn't the drugs. He wasn't hallucinating."

Edmund: "No, he was alone, he was frightened, and he was... Look, I don't care what you say. I know him. He wasn't himself, okay? He just... he was morbid. He was... he was wandering. He needed his family. He needed Peggy to give him soup. He needed Eugenia to make him laugh. He needed Gillian to read him a story. He needed love around him." (He stares accusing at her.)

Alexandra: "How dare you."

Edmund: "I loved him, and I let him down. Don't you understand? Because of you. Because of you and your promise and your damned certainty. He's out there clinging to a rock somewhere, waiting for us to rescue him. But there's not going to be a rescue. No. No. Alex made certain of that. She called off the search. Alex knows what's best. It's over. She's done. Dimitri's dead. And you..." (He moves closer to her, raising his voice.)

Alexandra (slapping him hard in the face): "Damn you!" (She rushes away, sobbing.)

Edmund (yelling after her): "...pulled the plug on him! You killed my brother!"

The scene fades out, returns later. Gillian enters the hunting lodge and looks around. She starts straightening the magazines on the coffee table, then goes over to the desk and picks up Dimitri's picture.
Gillian: "Oh, Dimitri." (There's a moment of silence as she stares at the picture, then Alex throws the door open and enters the lodge.) "Alex, where have you been? I've been so worried."

Alexandra (pacing, breathing hard): "You needn't be. I'm okay."

Gillian: "This is the worst day of my life, so I can only imagine what you're feeling." (Alex walks over and puts her hand lovingly on Gillian's face.)

Alexandra: "I'm fine, darling. I'm fine."

Gillian: "Can I make you some tea to warm you up?"

Alexandra: "No. I need to cool off. Maximillian's saddled outside. I'm going to go for a ride." (She starts taking off her coat and goes into the bedroom to change.)

Edmund (walking through the open door, still wanting to fight with Alex): "Where is she?"

Gillian: "Alex?"

Edmund: "She's not going to get away with this."

Gillian: "Get away with what?"

Edmund: "Gillian, look, I know how much you love Dimitri."

Gillian: "She loves him, too."

Edmund: "She's got a funny way of showing it."

Gillian: "Edmund, she's completely destroyed."

Edmund: "Somehow I doubt that." (Alex then comes out, wearing a riding coat and holding a riding crop. She ignores Edmund and walks towards the door.)

Alexandra: "I'll be back when I've ridden." (She briskly walks out.)

Edmund (calling after her): "You're upset. You're going to spook the horse. Stubborn..."

Gillian: "Edmund, I have a bad feeling about this. Please go after her... for Dimitri."

The scene fades out, returns later. Posing nude on the beach while Stuart is painting her portrait, Marian notices [off screen] that a woman has just been thrown off a horse. The woman is lying on the ground, the horse, who's limping, is nudging her. Worried, she tells Stuart to go see if the woman is okay while she calls for help. The scene fades out as Stuart rushes off and Marian picks up the phone. The scene returns later. Two paramedics are tending to Alex, who's sitting on the beach. Stuart and Marian are standing nearby, looking on.

Paramedic #1: "Well, no apparent fractures or broken bones here."

Paramedic #2 (trying to inspect her eyes with a penlight): "We can't rule out concussion."

Alexandra: "I fell on my backside, not my head." (To Stuart and Marian) "Can you see Maximillian from there?" (They turn their heads, looking for Max.)

Paramedic #1 (trying to take her blood pressure.): We're concerned about internal injuries here."

Alexandra: "My blood pressure is steady, and my head is clear." (She yelps as he touches her wrist to hard.) "Ah!"

Paramedic #1 (checking out her wrist): "That hurt?"

Alexandra: "Yeah. I guess I've sprained my wrist. But other than that, I'm fine. Can you see the
horse..."

Paramedic #1: "We're taking you in for neurological testing."

Alexandra: "I am a doctor. Listen to me. I don't want any treatment."

Paramedic #1: "Most doctors are patients from hell, all right?"

Alexandra (sarcastically): "Thank you."

Paramedic #1: "I'll radio dispatch we're on our way."

Alexandra (stubbornly): "I'm not going anywhere. I just had the air knocked out of me. I need to rest for a minute."

Stuart: "Look, fellas, I know you have to be really extra careful, but Dr. Marick knows better than anyone how she's feeling."

Paramedic #1 (rudely, eyeing Stuart's paint splattered jumpsuit): "Hey, buddy, you want to help? Why don't you go tend to that lame horse over there and let me do my job."

Marian (outraged): "How dare you speak to my husband like that. This is Mr. Stuart Chandler."

Stuart (trying to soothe Marian down): "It's okay."

Paramedic #2: "Adam chandler's brother?"

Marian: "Adam is Stuart Chandler's younger brother by five minutes."

Stuart (pulling Marian aside): "Marian. Marian, I don't need you to build me up to everyone like that.

Marian: "Stuart, why can't everyone in the world see you the way I do? You are such a beautiful man."

Stuart: "I don't need everyone to see me the way you do. Just you." (They hug.)

The scene fades out, then returns later. Alex, still sitting on the ground, is signing a release waiver.
Alexandra: "I know you guys are just doing your job, and I do appreciate it, but, really, I'm fine. I've taken much worse falls than this. So you guys can just go. Thank you." (She flexes her wrist, wincing a bit.)

Paramedic #1: "If you say so." (They leave. Alex puts her hand up to her forehead, stunned. A pair of legs strolls up to her. She looks up to find Edmund glaring down at her.)

The scene fades out, then returns. Alex struggles to get up. Stuart and Marian rush over to help her up.
Marian: "Wait, let us help you." (She and Stuart help her steady herself.)

Alexandra: "No, please. I'm fine."

Marian: "Watch yourself."

Alexandra: "Thank you. Thank you." (To Edmund, who's silently glaring at her.) "Did you find maximillian? Is he all right?"

Edmund: "Yeah, I found him. His leg is broken."

Alexandra (stunned): "Oh, no, it isn't."

Edmund (staring coldly at her): "He's lame and he's suffering, and I'm going to have to put him down."

Alexandra: "No. No."
