Dimitri Disappears
Having called a truce on their disagreement about bringing Dimitri home from the hospital, Alex and Edmund arrive at Sea View Hospital to discover Dimitri's bed is empty. She lays Dimitri's medical chart on the bed, and she and Edmund look around the room, confused.  (Sept 23, 1999)

Edmund:  "I'll check his bathroom." (He goes into the bathroom.)

Alexandra: "Yeah." (She puts her purse down and goes over to the bed, sliding her hands around and underneath the covers.)

Edmund (coming out): "He's not there."

Alexandra: "It's cold."

Edmund: "Where could he..." (stops, confused by her statement.) "...what?"

Alexandra: "The bed's cold."

Edmund: "Tests. Maybe somebody took him for tests?"

Alexandra: "Yeah. I didn't order any. Maybe Dr. Silbert did." (She gets up and walks toward the door just as Dr. Silbert enters the room.)  "Oh, I was just coming for you."

Dr. Silbert (notices the empty bed): "Where's your husband?"

Alexandra: "Well, I was hoping you could tell me."

Dr. Silbert: "Well, he was sleeping the last time I looked in on him."

Edmund: "You're saying you don't know where my brother is? My brother's missing?"

Dr. Silbert: "I'll call security." (He walks over and picks up the phone.)

The scene fades out, then returns later where Dr. Silbert is finishing up his phone call.
Dr. Silbert (into the phone): "Thank you." (He hangs up.)

Edmund: "Have they seen him? He's in his gown. He should be pretty easy to spot."

Dr. Silbert: "Well, that's... that's if he's left the grounds. Now, he still may be in the hospital. Patients often walk around the floors for exercise."

Edmund: "What color robe... Alex, what did he have?"

Alexandra (taking off her glasses): "Blue, I think."

Dr. Silbert: "Mr. Grey, this isn't necessary. Our security team will handle it."

Edmund: "Yeah, right. So will I, ok?"

Dr. Silbert: "Now, hospital protocol will not..."

Edmund (yelling): "Look, I don't give a damn about hospital protocol! I want to find my brother!"

Alexandra: "Edmund, this is a big hospital. You don't know your way around. You can't go racing in and out of patients' rooms, so just let security handle it. He's probably going to walk in here any minute now."

Edmund: "10 Minutes."

Dr. Silbert: "I'll stay on top of it personally." (He leaves.)

Alexandra (grateful he's calmed down): "Thank you."

Edmund: "Is he strong enough to wander around by himself?"

Alexandra: "I don't know." (She picks up Dimitri's medical chart and glances over it.) "Yeah, I mean, his heart rate is solid. Pulse strong, pressure looks good. He was doing so well on the stem cell therapy. It's funny. When patients start rallying, they feel stronger and they get a lot more confident."

Edmund: "Ok. Ok. Well, then maybe... like what Silbert said... maybe he got confident and went out and took some exercise."

Alexandra (not sounding convinced): "Yeah. Yeah."

Edmund: So that's something my brother would do, you know, without telling anybody." (She walks past him and stares at the bed in silence.)  "Alex, look, he's strong. He's got a will of iron. He's a fighter. I mean, look, he survived all this, right? He'll be fine, wherever he is." (She turns to look at him.)

Alexandra: "Um."

The scene fades out, then returns later where an upset Alex and Edmund are pacing up and down in the waiting area.
Edmund: "It's been more than 10 minutes. What the hell's happening?!"

Alexandra: "Well, it's not long enough to search a hospital."

Dr. Silbert (arriving): "Security's been through the main areas. They've been unable to locate Mr. Marick so far."

Edmund: "Well, then look more than in the main areas. Look in the supply closets, the lab, the operating room."

Dr. Silbert: "Mr. Grey, they are continuing to search, but they had to check the obvious
places first." (Alex lets out a loud sigh.)

Edmund: Well, that was a waste of time because my brother's too smart for that. If he was trying to escape..."

Dr. Silbert: "Escape?"

Alexandra (sharply): "Why would he do that? He chose this facility."

Edmund: "Well, he chose to leave, too, Alex."

Alexandra (to Silbert): "Have they checked everywhere outside?"

Dr. Silbert: "They're doing that now. I have to ask... by any chance, did you find a note of any kind in his room?"

Alexandra (confused): "A note?"

Edmund: "Why are you asking about a note?"

Dr. Silbert: "Well, perhaps he wrote one telling you where he was going and you overlooked it. Maybe it fell behind the bed."

Alexandra: "No, I didn't see one."

Edmund: "Excuse me." (He races out of the waiting room to search Dimitri's room.)

Dr. Silbert: "I'll tell you what security finds when they finish checking the grounds."

Alexandra: "Thank you."

The scene fades out, then return as Alex is rushing after Edmund to Dimitri's room. He begans ripping up the covers, searching for a note. She goes over to the closet and begins searching Dimitri's clothes, digging through the pockets. Finding nothing in the bed, Edmund kneels down before the chest of drawers, pulls the drawers out and tossing about the clothes. Alex, carrying over one of Dimitri's shirts, glances over at Edmund, then freezes. Above Edmund's head, she spots a blue item stuck in the closed window. Dropping the shirt, she quickly walks past Edmund, who whirls around. Opening the window, she pulls out the item.
Alexandra: "It's the tie to his robe."

The scene fades out, then returns to Alex and Edmund looking out at the window.
Alexandra: "Good. Security's searching the grounds." (She walks away.)

Edmund (slamming down the window, angry): "What kind of hospital is this? This thing should be bolted so patients can't do stuff like this."

Alexandra: "He wasn't a prisoner."
Edmund (yelling at her): "Well, then why did he climb out the window?"

Alexandra (yelling back): "I don't know" (A moment of silence between the two.) "Sorry."

Edmund: "I'm sorry. Look, could he have become disoriented, delusional?"

Alexandra: "No. I think he knew exactly what he was doing."

Edmund: "Then why would he leave? We were making preparations for him to... to leave, to come home, bring him home to Wildwind."

Alexandra: "He wouldn't have gone to Wildwind."

Edmund (starting to raise his voice): "Yeah, he was looking to forward to coming home to Wildwind."

Alexandra (bitterly): "No, you were looking forward to him coming home."

Edmund (sits down on the bed, shaking his bed, somber): "He started to hyperventilate."

Alexandra: "What?"

Edmund (putting his hand against his forhead and closing his eyes for a moment): "When I asked him if Gillian could come to see him."

Alexandra (staring hard at him): "What else did he say exactly?"

Edmund: "That he loved me and that he apologized for keeping his illness from me."

Alexandra: "And?"

Edmund: "And that he wanted me to look after you."

Alexandra: "Me? He said that?"

Edmund: "Ahem. And that he wanted... he said that Maria would have wanted me to set myself free." (He gets worried when she doesn't answer him.) "Alex, what are you thinking?"

The scene fades out, then returns. Alex is staring off in space, Edmund staring at her.
Edmund: "What do you know, Alex?"

Alexandra (finally looking at him): "I don't know anything for sure."

Edmund: "What do you know not for sure?"

Dr. Silbert (entering): "Security's made an initial search of the grounds. They can't find your brother."

Edmund: He's gone. He's... we found this (the bathrobe tie). It was in the window. It's from his robe."

Dr. Silbert: Listen, do you mind if I take this, show it to security? And they'll know what his robe looks like."

Edmund (handing it to him): "Yeah, fine. Thanks. Listen, I'm going to call the police."

Dr. Silbert: "That would be wise. I'll give this to security." (He leaves with the tie.)

Edmund (picks up the phone and dials): "Yes, this is Edmund Grey. I need to speak to Derek Frye. It's an emergency... Edmund Grey."

Staring off in thought, Alex recalls the nightmare she awoke from in the waiting room the night she performed surgery on Dimitri... in the flashback....

Alexandra: "Oh!" (She sits up and wipes at a tear running down her face.)

Edmund (rushes over to her, kneeling in front of her.): "Alexandra? Alex, you all right? What's wrong?"

Alexandra: Oh, such a horrible dream. What time is it? Is Dimitri all right?" (She fusses at her watch.)

Edmund: "He's fine. He's ok. He's all right."

Alexandra: "Oh, dear." (She puts her hands over her face and shakes her head.) "Oh, that was horrible. I was -- I was swimming in the ocean. It was night. It was freezing cold." (She pulls the blanket up, shivering.) "I was looking for Dimitri. I couldn't see him, but I just had this feeling that he was below the surface. So I dove down. But it was so dark, I couldn't see anything. He was there. He was within my reach. And I couldn't save him. Isn't that ironic? And I couldn't breathe. And I was just trying to swim to the surface. The currents kept pulling me down......."

Back to the present, where Edmund's finishing up his phone call
Edmund: "Right. Yeah, Derek, I'm in Seaview hospital, but I'm out of here. Listen, thanks. Ok, great." He hangs up the phone and addresses Alex.) "They're putting out an APB."

Alexandra: "I think I know where he is."

Edmund: "Where?"

Alexandra: "Come on." (She rushes out of the room, Edmund following her.)

The scene fades out, returns later... to a deserted beach. Edmund and Alex's muffled voices can be heard...
Edmund: "Dimitri!"

Alexandra: "Dimitri, where are you?! Dimitri!"

Edmund: "Dimitri!" (They finally come into view. Edmund reaches the beach before Alex, both breathless. She's carrying her shoes.) "We've been all over this beach. Whatever was in your dream, he's not here."

(Alex stops dead in her tracks, seeing Dimitri's robe on a low fence structure. She races over and picks it up, starting to sob.)

Alexandra: "Oh, god! Oh. It's his robe."

Edmund (rushes past her, into the water): "Dimitri!"

Alexandra (clutching the robe to her face, sobbing): "Oh, no... darling, please."
