Dimitri's Last Request
In the hospital waiting room, Alex and Edmund are met by Dr. Silbert. They stand up, Alex putting her blanket down on the chair.  (Sept. 20, 1999)

Alexandra: "What's happened, Dr. Silbert?"

Edmund: "Dimitri's responding? The treatment's successful, isn't it?"

Dr. Silbert (clutching his clipboard): "Well, I can tell you that the treatment's had some effect. Mr. Marick is no longer comatose."

Edmund: "Thank God."

Alexandra: "Is he oriented?"

Dr. Silbert: "Oh, yes. He's asking for you." (Alex smiles a little, glancing up at Edmund briefly.)

The scene fades out... returns later to show a disoriented Dimitri lying in bed, sharing off in space. He's having flashbacks of him and Alex falling in love, including Alex accepting his proposal and their wedding. Alex opens the door slowly, Edmund falling behind her.

Alexandra (standing in the doorway): "Dimitri?" (He starts at her voice and looks over at her, and she beams back at him. Dimitri, still having problems speaking, mutters something like "so".

The scene fades out... returns later. Alex walks over to Dimitri and sits down on the bed. Edmund stands in the background, hands clasped. Both Alex and Dimitri ignore Edmund, fixated only on one another.
Alexandra (smiling): "How are you feeling?" (Dimitri mutters something like "hmmm".) "You hungry?"

Dimitri: "For the sight of you. You know how much I love you."

Alexandra: "Yeah, I know."

Dimitri: "Will always love you."

Alexandra: "I'll always love you." (She runs a finger down his cheek.)

Dimitri: "Don't want you to suffer."

Alexandra: "I'm not suffering."

Dimitri: "It's not fair." (He stares pointed at Alex, she frowns a little, comprehending his remark.)

Edmund (interrupting, not catching on to what Dimitri means): "It's a miracle is what it is."

Dimitri: "No." (He's still ignoring Edmund, looking only at Alex, who's taken aback by his words and hard stare.)

Edmund: "I got to tell you, bro, the first time I saw you, it was kind of crazy. But now... she's a genius, your wife."

Dimitri (still looking only at Alex): "My wife..."

Edmund: "Yeah. You look so much better."

Alexandra (trepidly): "Well, we still have a ways to go."

Edmund: "Fine. Fine. Whatever. Just... welcome back."

Dimitri (still looking only at Alex): "Alex, I need to talk to Edmund alone." (She looks up at Edmund, then back at a somber Dimitri.)

The scene fades out, then returns later.... Alex has left the brothers alone.
Dimitri (trying to clear his voice): "Ahem. I know you're angry."

Edmund (sittind down on the bed next to Dimitri): "Not anymore."

Dimitri: "You should be. I've kept things from you."

Edmund: "Hey, Dimi, you were faced with... who knows how I'd react, you know, if I thought I was going to lose everything."

Dimitri: "Hey. You'd be loving."

Edmund: "Yeah, well, I won that kinder, gentler contest a long time ago."

Dimitri (very somber): "You take care of her."

Edmund (surprised): "Of Alex? Hey, you know, she's incredible. She's brilliant, and she's honorable, by
the way." (He points his finger at Dimitri.) "She kept your promise. I found out. She didn't break it."

Dimitri: "She loves me."

Edmund: "Yeah, well, you're a lucky man."

Dimitri: "Promise me. This will be hard for her."

Edmund: "Dimitri, I know how tough this is, ok? But you have all of us here... all of us. You know what I did with the west wing? I turned it into an on-site hospital. You say the word and you're home the same day."

Dimitri: "And then what?"

Edmund (surprised again): "...And then you recover."

Dimitri: "You think so?"

Edmund: "I know it. Hey, it's the only acceptable option if you're a Marick."

Dimitri: "Just...promise me you will take care of her."

Edmund: "Dimitri, we'll all take care of her, ok? We all will. You should see her with Gillian. I mean, the two of them, they're a pair. They share everything. She wants to see you."

Dimitri: "No."

Edmund: "Dimi, she needs you. She loves you."

Dimitri: "Edmund, no. No, not like this. Not like this. Please. " (He gets very upset, grabbing on at Edmund's collar.)

Edmund (trying to calm down an agitated Dimitri): "Ok, shh. Shh. Just breathe. Take it easy, ok? Everybody's going to come in and yell at me, all right? Easy. It's ok. That's probably your plan, right? To get me thrown out of here."

Dimitri: "I love you."

Edmund: "I love you too, bro."

Dimitri: "You tell Gillian I am sorry. I love her."

Edmund: "Ok. Ok. You can tell her yourself, all right? Whenever you're ready."

Dimitri: "And Eugenia. Tell her toujours, l'amour."

Edmund: "No, you're going to do that. Not with my accent."

Dimitri: "Take care of her."

Edmund: "Ok. Ok. Ok. Listen. I will. I promise. Ok?"

Dimitri (breathing hard and trying to shout): "Alex!... Alex!"

Edmund: All right, I'll get her, ok? I'll get her, ok? You just rest easy. Dimitri, I'll see you tomorrow, ok? Ok? I'll see you. See you tomorrow, ok." (He gets up and starts slowly walking towards the door, but Dimitri's voice stops him.)

Dimitri: "Hey, Edmund. Maddie. Love.. too much.. for me."

Edmund (grinning madly, pride evident in his voice): "I can't help but spoil her. You know, you should see her these days. She's so... she's so cute."

Dimitri: "Set yourself free. She wants that... Maria."  (Edmund comes back and takes Dimitri's hand, laying his other hand on Dimitri's shoulder.)

Edmund: "You get some rest." (He walks to the door, looks back at Dimitri for a moment, then quietly shuts the door. The last shot is Dimitri resting in bed.)

The scene fades out... returns later to Alex entering Dimitri's room, clutching her purse. Thinking he's asleep, she tries but fails to quietly shut the door. Walking over to his IV, she taps it. Then she goes over to him, bends over and kisses him softly on the lips. He then grabs her and kisses her again.
Dimitri (coming to): "Mmm, mmm."

Alexandra (surprised): "I thought you were asleep." (She sits down on the bed next to him.)

Dimitri (murmurs groggily): "Mmm."

Alexandra: "Edmund just left."

Dimitri: "You take care of him, Alex."

Alexandra (smiles): "I think I have enough on my plate taking care of you, thank you very much."

Dimitri: "He's been sad man long time."

Alexandra: "I know."

Dimitri: "You... so lovely."

Alexandra (laughs): "No. I haven't slept in a week."

Dimitri: "Don't contradict a sick man." (He holds onto her wrist as she strokes his throat.)

Alexandra: "Ok. No, sir."

Dimitri: "So lovely. You tell me about the stream."

Alexandra: "Oh... where I used to go with my father?"

Dimitri: "Yeah." (He's getting groggy again.)

Alexandra (smiles): "Again... Well, it was most beautiful in the springtime when there were daffodils everywhere, masses of them, all over the banks. It was so beautiful. My father really loved them. And the little blue ones -- I forget what they're called. The tiny ones. They grow right down by the water's edge. And sometimes I'd find a frog, and I'd slip him in my pocket and take him home to scare mom. And there'd be soft stones that I'd dip in the water." (She stokes his head as he falls asleep.) "I'd watch
them change color." (A sob escapes her and she tries not to cry.) "And the fish would poke their heads up, and they'd catch a breath of air....." (Realizing he's asleep, she softly whispers.) "I love you."  (Then she gets up, turns off both the lights, touches his shoulder for a moment and leaves the room.)
