David: "Don't tell me you came all
the way back to Pine Valley for the Inn's chicken pot pie."
Alexandra (sighs): "Don't keep your
lunch date waiting on my account."
David (motioning to his notebook):
"Working lunch. I thought you'd be happily settled in London by now."
Alexandra (not looking at him): "Hmm.
My husband had other plans."
David:
"Really?"
Alexandra (dismissing David as Jackson
joins them.): "If you'll excuse me."
Jackson: "Hello, Alexandra." (to
David, who doesn't want to leave): "Doc."
Alexandra (to Jack): "Please, sit down."
Jackson: "Thank you." (He sits.)
Alexandra: "Thank you so much for
coming on such short notice."
Jackson: "It's my pleasure."
The scene fades out, then returns later. David's still
curious why Alex is back in town and won't budge.
David: "Alex was just mentioning that
there was a wrinkle in Dimitri's will."
Jackson (staring coldly at David):
"Was she?"
Alexandra (to David): "This is
private. I know that's very difficult for you to grasp." (Jackson covers his mouth
with his hand, trying not to laugh.)
David: "Get over that jet lag,
Alex." (to Jackson) "Excuse me." (He moves away, choosing a table nearby.)
Jackson (to David as he's leaving):
"Oh, sure." (to Alex) "So, tell me, why didn't we want Dr. David to know
about this foundation?"
Alexandra (sighs, rubbing her neck with
both hands): "Oh. I don't like him. It's a chemical thing."
Jackson: "I like plain
speaking." (He glances over at David, who keeps glancing over trying to figure out
what they're talking about.) "Here's a little plain speaking from me to you... I
don't like him much, either. Now, what can I do for you?"
Alexandra: "The Andrassy Foundation
for Rare Diseases."
Jackson: "You've come to tell me that
you've accepted the post."
Alexandra (shakes her head): "Don't
get me wrong. I am so proud that my husband has provided for this very important work, but
I have zero interest in staying here and running the foundation."
Jackson (trying to lay on the guilt trip):
"Even though it was Dimitri's last wish?"
Alexandra (softly): "No, I couldn't
say no to him when he was alive." (She pauses, then continues.) "And it isn't
any easier now, but I can't do this, Jackson."
Jackson: "He chose you. He chose you
because he knew you would be the best person to head up this foundation. Now, Dimitri
didn't make decisions like that lightly."
Alexandra: "Oh, I know. I mean, there
was a time in my career when I would have loved to have taken on this kind of
responsibility. I would have loved it. But that time has passed."
Jackson (silent for a moment):
"Pardon me, but is this strictly about your reticence to get back into medicine, or
is this about something else?"
Alexandra (sharply): "I don't want to
stay here."
Jackson: "Here. Are you
telling me that Pine Valley is the deal breaker?" (She nods quietly.) "Gee, you
know, if I was a betting man, I would have bet it had something to do with Edmund
Grey."
The scene fades out, then returns later. David is still
glancing over at them. The food has been delivered to their table. Jack refuses to let her
back out of the directorship, trying to convince her to stay.
Alexandra: "Edmund is not the reason I don't want to stay
here." (She takes a bite of her food.)
Jackson: "Oh, come on, now. Is Pine
Valley so terrible?"
Alexandra: "Yes. For me it has been.
I lost my husband here. I lied to all those good people. This has not been easy."
Jackson: "Look, I realize you've been
under a lot of stress. I realize you're probably still grieving. So I tell you what... why
don't you take a little time for yourself and then give me your decision?"
Alexandra: "Oh, I need to start
somewhere fresh, where I only have good memories of my life with Dimitri."
Jackson: "You could start fresh right
here. You could keep Dimitri alive right here by heading up this foundation. And you'll
always have your memories. You can create new memories... and a bonus... maybe you can
heal this rift with Edmund, as well."
Alexandra (laughs): "Oh, you're such a good lawyer."
Jackson: "I am the best lawyer you
know. And I'd like to think I make a pretty good friend, too."
Alexandra (smiles): "Yes. You do. I
appreciate you trying to keep me here. It's nice."
Jackson: "Then tell me you've changed
your mind and that you'll stay."
The scene fades out, then returns.
Alexandra (gripping her glass): "You have to find someone else to
run this foundation because I'm not staying here. No matter how much I love my husband, no
matter how much of a good friend you are, it's
impossible." (She takes a sip.)
Jackson: "Look, if this is about
Edmund, remember, I'm on that board, too. I can run interference. I can keep conflict to a
minimum, and I promise you I will."
Alexandra (interrupting): "Really,
it's not about Edmund. It's about me. I don't want to remain here." (She puts down
her glass.) "I certainly don't want to resume my medical career. This codicil... it
contradicts my plans."
Jackson (realizing she's not going to
change her mind, leans back in defeat): "All right, then. I'll start looking for your
replacement."
Alexandra: "Thank you." (David
comes over on his way out.)
David (to Alex, who won't look up at him):
"So since you're back in town, does this mean we're going to see more of you?"
Alexandra: "Slim chance."
David: "Pity." (He leaves.)
Alexandra (annoyed):
"Oh." (Jackson says nothing, just watches her as she resumes eating.)
The scene fades out, then returns. She and Jack are sharing
a cheesecake.
Alexandra (taking a bite): "Mmm. They don't make cheesecake like
this in London."
Jackson: "Well, they make cheesecake
like this every day here in Pine Valley, so there's another reason to stay." (There's
a moment of silence.)
Alexandra (laughs at his expression):
"Don't look so glum."
Jackson: "I didn't mean to look glum.
Sorry about that. You know, I've had to do some rather tough things as a lawyer."
Alexandra (solemnly): "Like trying to
arrest me at the airport when I first arrived?"
Jackson: "No, I find it more
difficult to let you go now. Look, you know you're the best for this job. You know that,
and you know that that is what Dimitri wanted." (Silence again.)
Alexandra: "You promised me that
you're going to start looking for my replacement immediately."
Jackson: "All right, I
will. You're going to have to help me screen candidates. It could take a
while."
Alexandra: "Well, if I have to."
Jackson (hopeful): "Good. It could
take months, you know."
Alexandra: "No. The perfect person is
out there around the corner." (She nods, but he only shakes his head.)
Jackson: "No. The perfect person is
sitting right here in front of me."
