Erica Threatens Alex
Alex has accepted Edmund's offer to escort her to Palmer's party, but she's still got her mind on Gillian. She's wearing one of Gillian's dresses, a black one as she's still in mourning. Edmund looks nice in his tux and is in a good mood. They arrive and quickly enter the lobby area.  (Nov. 28, 1999)

Alexandra: "I think I'm going to call Jake and see how Gillian is doing."

Edmund (stops her): "Gillian is fine. Jake is taking good care of her. Listen, you work too hard. I want you to do three things tonight..." (He smiles and lightly shakes his finger at her.) "I want you to drink champagne, laugh at my jokes, and teach me a couple of dance steps. You think you can manage that?"

Alexandra (teasing): "Laugh at your jokes?"

Edmund: "Ahem. Two out of three, okay?" (She laughs and they smile at one another. Alex then turns and stops dead in her tracks as she spots David and Erica standing near the door to the ballroom.)

Alexandra: "Oh, no."

Across the room, David and Erica are surprised when they spot Alex with Edmund.
Erica (annoyed): "What is Edmund doing with Alex? I mean, he can't be that desperate."

David (slightly amused, glances back over at Alex and Edmund): "That's probably what people will say about us. You, at least- 'She can't be that desperate'."

The scene fades out, then returns later. Edmund and an unhappy Alex walk over to David and Erica who are standing near the doorway. Alex is clenching her teeth.
David: "Hello, Edmund." (Pause.) "Alex."

Edmund: "Hello, David."

Erica (ignoring Alex, address Edmund): "Edmund, I'm amazed to see YOU (with Alex)."

Edmund (smiling, returns her comment by referring to her with David): "Well, tonight is a night for amazement.".

Alexandra (not wanting to deal with Erica and David, looks off at the door and gives a blatant excuse): "Oh, look there's.... something." (She quickly takes off into the ballroom. An amused Edmund motions goodbye to Erica and David and follows after Alex.)

Erica (turning to face David: "When are you going to tell me about you and Alex?"

David: "She refuses to let me continue on Gillian's case because she feels threatened. Same thing goes with her withholding the directorship of the foundation."

Erica (shaking her head): "It's more than that. It's more than a professional rivalry."

David: "You're right. It was a long time ago. A lifetime ago. But it's still a problem."

Erica: "You'll tell me when you're ready." (Pause. Alex then rushes by, catching Erica's eye.) "Excuse me, I'm going to freshen up."

The scene fades out, then returns later. Erica has cornered Alex.
Erica: "You're in over your head." (Alex shakes her head, confused.) "David."

Alexandra: "You are too,"

Erica: "You don't have the power to stop him from being appointed head of the foundation. I'm quite sure that the hospital board will back David."

Alexandra: "Well, it isn't really their decision to make. And it's actually none of your business."

Erica: "It certainly is. For one thing, I was..."

Alexandra (interrupts, sarcastically motioning with her hands): "Oh, married to Dimitri twice."

Erica: "Yes. And for the good of everyone, you really should admit you made a mistake and appoint David."

Alexandra (shake her head): "Never happen."

Erica: "Word of caution, then. With an attitude like that, you really could make very powerful enemies."

Alexandra: "You?"

Erica: "I'd rather be a friend." (Alex smiles slightly, then laughs lightly as Erica walks away.)

The scene fades out, then returns later. On the dance floor, Edmund twirls Alex as they dance, then both walk off to the side.
Edmund: "You dance beautifully."

Alexandra: "Thank you. It was three years at Miss Sprat's Dance Academy. She wanted to turn me into a proper British lady. But honestly, I would have much preferred to have been riding my horse or collecting frogs or something."

Edmund: "A tomboy who dances like a dream? My brother knew what he was doing."

Alexandra (stops mid-laugh, surprised at his compliment): "Well, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."

Edmund: "Stick around. You ain't heard nothing yet." (They begin to walk away and she slips her arm through his.)
