Alex buys a horse and meets Guy (March 10, 2000)
On a whim, Alex purchases a horse for which Edmund has to find a trainer.

Alex: "Oh, there you are. Good morning."
Edmund: "Well, good morning. You look well rested."
Alex: "Yeah. Not all of us slept well, though."
Edmund: "Like Gillian?"
Alex: "Mm-hmm. She left early to go to the courthouse, see if she could talk to Jake before the hearing."
Edmund: "You know, a couple days ago, Gillian was married with a future with Colby and Jake, and now she's wondering if she's even going to stay married. You know, I'd like to strangle Adam. He just poisons every life he touches."
Alex: "Should I go out and come in again? It's such a gorgeous day out."
Edmund: "Want some coffee?"
Alex: "Mm-hmm. So, Edmund..."
Edmund: "Yeah?"
Alex: "I bought you a horse."
Edmund: "Just like that?"
Alex: "Mm-hmm. Oh, he's so gorgeous. I saw him and I had to buy him."
Edmund: "Wait a minute... you... you went out, you saw a horse, and you bought him?"
Alex: "Yeah. Don't look at me like that, please."
Edmund: "Oh. How am I looking?"
Alex: "Well, I'm not trying to replace Maximillian. Please don't think that. I could never do that. He was one-of-a-kind."
Edmund: "Yeah. But I have Califa."
Alex: "Yeah, and he's lovely, but now we can ride together. Oh, this horse is so beautiful. He reminds me of when I used to ride as a teenager. He's wild and spirited."
Edmund: "If you say so."

Alex: "I do say so."
Edmund: "What's going on with you?"
Alex: "I'm tired of living my life in limbo. You know, I'm not making any decisions. I'm just drifting. I'm so wrapped up in my past and I want to live again, not just exist."
Edmund: "And this horse that you're buying is a step towards reclaiming that life?"
Alex: "Yeah, in a way, it is. Wait till you see him."
Edmund: "He's here?"
Alex: "Mm-hmm. Just got out of the trailer. Do you want see him?"

Edmund: "Alex?"
Alex: "Yeah?"
Edmund: "That's quite a gift. Thank you."
Alex: "What do you really think, though?"
Edmund: "I think he's magnificent."
Alex: "Yes."
Edmund: "And think if you had a horse with that much spirit when you were teenager, well, no wonder you're a hell of a rider."
Alex: "Oh, I was obsessed. I used to stay with the horses sometimes overnight just to be close to them. I can't wait to get started on him."
Edmund: "You know, a horse like this, though, it's a big responsibility... you know, long-term."
Alex: "Do you think I would have brought such a magnificent creature to Wildwind if I wasn't going to stay here and watch him reach his potential?"
Edmund: "How long you think that would take?"
Alex: "Months. Years, even. Right, I'm going to go talk to Angus, get him clean out his stall."
Edmund: "Uh, Angus... Alex, he's... he's gone."
Alex: "What do you mean?"
Edmund: "Yeah, he's..."
Alex: "He left?"
Edmund: "Yeah, he left me a note. Actually, with Peggy. It said, 'family emergency.'"
Alex: "Uh..."

Edmund: "I can read it. He doesn't know when he's going to come back and we have to hire somebody in the interim until he knows his plans."
Alex: "Oh, well, it's a good thing I know my way around a hoof pick, isn't it?"

Edmund: "You going to clean out the stalls, too?"
Alex: "I can muck with the best of them."
Edmund: "What?"
Alex: "What?"
Edmund: "I've just never seen anybody so excited about manure."

Alex: "I can teach you, if you like."
Edmund: "No, thank you. I got to go the tack shop, see if I can get us a trainer and a groom for that creature of yours."
Alex: "Creature of yours."

Alex: "No, I just want Dr. Wheat to look at him. Thoroughbred gelding, just turned 3. I had him vetted already, but I didn't get the x-rays back yet. Yeah. No, no, no, no, he seems really sound. I just... I want to make sure he doesn't have navicular. Okay. Thanks."

Alex has a flashback of Maximillian's [the horse] death. Alex's voice: "Come on, say it to my face. You think I killed Maximillian."
Edmund: "I pulled the trigger. I killed him, didn't I?"
Alex: "Yeah, but it's my fault he's dead. If I hadn't taken him out and ridden him..."
Edmund: "'If,' 'if,' 'if'! If you hadn't come to this town, Alex... it's not the horse. It's just everything. It's all the hell you put us through."
Alex: "You think I wanted any of this to happen? I've lost my husband."
Edmund: "And I lost my brother! And it's because of you. Want to know what I feel? You want to know how many times I wish to God that you never met my brother? How I hate him for turning to you and cutting the rest of us out of his life?"
Alex: "Well, that had nothing to do with me. That was his choice."
Edmund: "You took him away from us. You're not a healer, Alex. You're a death sentence. Your love killed him. And everything you say you love, everything you touch dies."

Alex: "I just want to get on with my life."
Edmund: "Alex, you still here?"
Alex: "Yep."
Edmund: "Good. Alex, meet Guy Donahue, our new trainer."
Alex: "Oh. Your kidding?"
Edmund: "I met him at the tack shop. What are the odds?"
Alex: "I don't know. They must be in our favor today. What kind of experience have you had?"
Guy: "With horses? Well, I've been around horses all my life. Dabbled in everything, competed mostly in a-circuit hunter/jumpers."
Alex: "Oh, that's very competitive."
Guy: "Mm-hmm."
Edmund: "Well, you're not going to be talking to the horses like in that movie, are you?"
Guy: "Mr. Grey, I do whatever it takes to reach an understanding. I don't have much respect for trainers who have to beat their horses into submission. Patience. That's the key. My horses work with me, not for me."
Alex: "Shall we give it a try?"
Edmund: "You want to meet your charge?"
Guy: "You bet."
Edmund: "Good."
Alex: "All right."
Guy: "You coming, ma'am?"
Alex: "Yeah."

Guy: "Whole lot of chrome on that boy."
Alex: "Yeah."
Guy: "Haven't seen a horse this promising in a long time. Right off the track?"
Alex: "Yeah, you ever work with a horse like that before?"
Guy: "Well, California... King's Ranch and Galway Downs, Artes Stables."
Alex: "Oh, I don't know any of those, I'm afraid. I'm new to the states."
Guy: "Oh."
Alex: "What brought you out east?"
Guy: "Well, the circuit in the east has a rep of being a little tougher than the west."
Alex: "Hmm."
Guy: "I like... I like the competition."
Alex: "So you're ambitious, huh?"
Guy: "Oh, I'm making my way around slowly."
Alex: "Where do you suggest that we begin with him?"
Guy: "Well, check his ground manners, work him on the longer line a little. We go from there, maybe try some poles. You have a variety of bits?"
Alex: "Yeah. I was thinking maybe we could start him out on a rubber snaffle."
Guy: "Well, I'll give that a try. You know your horses."
Alex: "No, you're the trainer. And the groom, apparently, for now."
Guy: "Well, yeah, Mr. Grey explained all that."
Alex: "That means mucking, feeding, cleaning after two horses."
Guy: "I find taking care of horses very peaceful."
Edmund: "Well, speaking of mucking, I've got a writer to meet back at the house. Guy, listen, if you need anything, we have an account at the tack shop. Welcome aboard."
Guy: "Thanks. That's great. Okay."
Alex: "I'd better get going, too. I'm glad Edmund ran into you."

Guy: "Mm-hmm. Oh, before you go, what do I call him?"
Alex: "Oh, Mr. Grey."
Guy: "The horse?"
Alex: "Sorry?"
Guy: "The horse have a name?"
Alex: "No. No, we didn't name him yet. I don't know. We've been... well, I was thinking maybe we could call him Maximillian after this horse that we both loved, but it doesn't seem right."
Guy: "What, something happened to Maximillian?"
Alex: "Yeah, he got injured..."
Guy: "Oh."
Alex: "Had to be put down."
Guy: "Well, that's a shame. So what's your second choice?"
Alex: "Scorpio. Yeah. I'll talk to Edmund. He might have another idea."
Guy: "Scorpio?"
Alex: "Yeah."

Guy: "Stargazer? Astronomy or astrology?"
Alex: "No. No, neither. I just... I don't know. It just fits."
Guy: "Mr. Grey has a great facility here. State-of-the-art hot-walker, perfectly maintained rings."
Alex: "eah. Well, I'm a stickler for good footing. You know, I've seen too many horses get injured jumping on hard ground."
Guy: "It's nice working for people who care about their animals. Thank you for hiring me. Not many people will take a chance on a perfect stranger like that."
Alex: "Edmund's a good guy."
Guy: "He's generous, too. He told me I could bunk here for a while till Scorpio gets used to me... if that's okay with you."
Alex: "Yeah, sure. I mean, as long as you'll be comfortable."
Guy: "I dig comfy. All right."
Alex: "Okay. Good-bye."
Guy: "Yeah, bye."

Edmund: "Hey."
Alex: "Hi."
Edmund: "Guy get settled in okay?"
Alex: "Yeah. I was surprised to hear you said he could live here."
Edmund: "Is there a problem with that?"
Alex: "No. It's nice of you to give him a place to stay."
Edmund: "Well, you know, I checked out his references and he seems to be honest and hard-working and works miracles with horses."
Alex: "I know. Seems too good to be true."
Edmund: "You pick up some strange vibe?"
Alex: "No. I mean, as long as he's good with horses, and this one in particular."
Edmund: "Have you named him yet?"
Alex: "No. Don't you want to do that?"
Edmund: "Well, you seem to have such a connection to this horse."
Alex: "I was thinking of Scorpio."
Edmund: "The scorpion. Noted for its deadly sting. Should I be worried about riding him?"
